Q. What is the Energy Tax Credit?

A. The American Recovery and Reinvestmant Act of 2009 was passed and signed into law in February, 2009. This bill allows taxpayers's to receive a tax credit of 30% up to $1,500 of the cost of approved energy efficiency home improvements. This bill extends, amends and expands tax credits originally introduced in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPACT) and amended in the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008 (P.L. 110-343). Improvements that were "placed in service" starting Jan 1, 2009, through December 31, 2010 may qualify. (www.energy.gov/taxbreaks.htm)

You may learn more about what energy efficiency improvements qualify at www.energystar.com.

Q. What is a tax credit and how can I benefit?

A. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (www.energy.gov), a tax credit reduces tax dollar-for-dollar in comparison to a tax deduction that only reduces the tax owed by a percentage.

Q. Are garage doors covered in this tax credit?

A. Yes! According to the U.S. Department of Energy (www.energy.gov), you may be eligible for a tax credit of 30% up to $1,500 if the garage door was installed in 2009 or 2010. The garage door must have been installed in or on an insulated garage that belongs to the taxpayer's principal residence. The garage does not need to be attached. Some of the other tax credit requirements the garage door must also meet are:

  • The garage door must have a U-factor of 0.3 or less
  • The garage door must have an SHGC of 0.3 or less
  • The garage door must be certified by the manufacturer

Furthermore, a garage qualifies if the outside walls are insulated.

Q. Are installation costs covered?

A. No, installation costs are not covered under the energy tax credit. Only the garage door itself if covered.

Q. Do I get the tax credit for each energy efficient home improvement I have made during eligible time period?

A. No. Even if you purchase multiple eligible products you can only get a maximum of $1,500 over the 2-year period (2009 & 2010).

Q. I have installed a qualifying garage door and met all other requirements. What do I need to do next?

A. A Manufacturer Certification should be provided to you after your installation is complete. You will need to fill out the homeowner's portion of the form. You should keep copies of the Manufacturer Certification and your garage door installation receipt(s) but you do not need to submit it with your federal tax return. Remember, only the cost of the garage door is eligible; labor costs are not.

According to EnergyStar.com, to claim the tax credit for energy efficient products "placed in service" in 2009, you will need to file the 2009 IRS Form 5695 and submit it with your 2009 taxes (by April 15, 2010). Currently, only a DRAFT version of the 2009 IRS Form 5695 is available (without the instructions section). Click here to read more. www.energystar.com/taxcredits
